We excite electron-hole pairs in either semiconductor heterostructures or nantube based samples and study the light which is emitted
when they recombine (luminescence).
The emitted light gives information about the electronic state of the electron system. Try
running a virtual experiment for yourself below.
We are currently studying the states of a
two dimensional electron gas in high magnetic fields and low
temperatures where the quantum Hall effect occurs. New particles
and states of matter occur with excitations which have fractional
charges and spin textures associated with the Fractional Quantum Hall
Effect and the Quantum Hall Ferromagnet (Skyrmions).
